‘This headpiece can’t be beat’
This is how Harper’s Bazaar gushed over the hat Queen Máxima was wearing at Royal Ascot. The maker of this marvel? The Dutch hat designer Berry Rutjes. Her thirty years of experience, craftsmanship and creativity all come together in this creation.
Having studied fashion in The Hague, Berry attended the London College of Fashion to specialize in the traditional, artisanal techniques of millinery. In 1990, she established her own atelier in the Netherlands: Berry Rutjes Jr. Hat Design. This is where she designs and makes hats the traditional way, from fashionable and floppy, to flamboyant fedoras.
Not only private customers find their way to Berry’s atelier. Berry has also collaborated with fashion designers such as Marlies Dekkers and Michael Barnaart van Bergen. They asked her to design headpieces for their (couture) shows. She was also approached by the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, in connection with the ‘Catwalk’ exhibition curated by photographer Erwin Olof, to host a masterclass in corsage-making which drew full-house crowds. In her own atelier too, Berry has been hosting workshops and trainings for years, teaching the art of making hats and flower corsages. Her students are always satisfied: ‘Berry is very inspirational and shares her knowledge with a passion’ and ‘You immediately see the results’ are their enthusiastic reactions.
Do you want to learn how to make your own hat?
All this got Berry thinking: would it not be fun if everyone was given the opportunity of learning how to make a hat, from home, and at a time that was convenient for them? This is why she developed the Online Masterclass Couture Hat Making. This masterclass – for beginners and the advanced – teaches you all professional tricks of the trade.
